Tattoo Artist and Good Times Enthusiast

Medusa, né Gina Carlson, is an artist first but certainly a comedian second. She’s a PNW native who has a creative mind, a gigantic heart, and enough dirty jokes to make your mother blush. Her tattoos are meticulously drawn, with an eye for detail that is truly unmatched.

While her art career spans many mediums and years, she loves tattooing the most. Her journey into tattooing with a rough start in 2008 but didn't really kick off until she became licensed in Oregon at the beginning of 2020 after apprenticing for a few years off and on in both Washington and Oregon. She currently works out of The Black Hexagon (formerly Sideshow Alley Tattoo Odditorium) in Portland, OR. Her primary interests are illustrative tattoos depicting scenes of witchcraft, mythology, fantasy, nature, and the occult.

When she isn’t tattooing or burying herself in art projects, she spends her spare time enjoying music, spending time in the art studio, formulating skincare, flipping off cops, and hanging out with her rescue dog, Jonesy.

Some FAQ about Medusa

Tattoo Artist and Good Times Enthusiast

Tattoo Artist and Good Times Enthusiast

Why the name Medusa? ‘Medusa‘ was a nickname chosen by a friend when discussing performing arts stage names based on my love of snakes (my carpet python's name is Cher) and my bifurcated tongue. After a few years, almost all my friends were referring to me as Medusa, and it stuck.

What got you into tattooing? I was always an artist. When I was little, I would draw designs all over my arms and legs in marker. Eventually my mom expressed she hoped I wouldn't end up in a tattoo shop with all the other misfits and that’s where I first got the idea. Thanks, Mom!

What inspires you? I draw inspiration from several sources. I love nature, animals, plants, and various organic matter. Oddities and the occult have heavy impressions on my creations. I believe in spirits, sorcery, and divination and want to portray the life unknown in my work. I also draw influence from my musical tastes, which can vary from rock n roll to classical, as well as disco and pop and many other genres. I believe everything is influential if you have an open mind.
